UPDATE: I created a NEW, better Excel Negative Keyword Tool
If you've ever wondered how to identify negative keywords in Excel, I'm about to give you a tool that will help you see which one-word, two-word and three-word phrases are associated with ZERO conversions in your account. In other words, you will be able to identify those particular words within your keywords that are costing you a lot of money.
Someone recently asked me: "How would you automated identifying negative keywords"?
I was intrigued by the idea and started thinking about how to actually do it.
There are two problems when trying to automate negative keyword detection:
- Some keywords that are clearly negatives usually lack sufficient volume to identify using data.
- Ideally, the goal is to be pro-active rather than reactive. A good algorithm would detect negative keywords BEFORE any significant cost accrues.
Unfortunately, my tool solves neither of these problems. I haven't figured out how to identify low-volume negative keywords algorithmically. I have theories but don't have the technology or programming skills to make it happen.
My tool can help you identify high-cost phrases that have historically performed at either a high CPA or have NEVER been associated with a conversion. This can help you 'stop the bleeding' so-to-speak.
What further fueled my curiosity for automating negative keyword identification is that I came across a site called QueryMiner. I tried it out and it did accurately identify words within my account that I knew were poor performing. The issue I had with their tool was cost - it costs hundreds of dollars per month.
I'm not saying that this free Excel tool is better than QueryMiner. But, if you don't have hundreds of dollars to spend per month on a tool that identifies negative keywords then why not give my free tool a try!
